Castro Valley is located in central California. The city was named in honor of Don Guillermo Castro, a rancher and a soldier in the Mexican army. Castro was given a land grant that consisted of 28,000 acres. Because he had a gambling habit, he ended up having to sell off portions of the land in order to pay off some of his gambling debts. During the 1940s and 1950s Castro Valley was known for its chicken ranches. Today it exists as a residential community comprised of individuals who commute to the larger surrounding cities.
