Castro Valley is located in central California. The city was named in honor of Don Guillermo Castro, a rancher and a soldier in the Mexican army. Castro was given a land grant that consisted of 28,000 acres. Because he had a gambling habit, he ended up having to sell off portions of the land in order to pay off some of his gambling debts. During the 1940s and 1950s Castro Valley was known for its chicken ranches. Today it exists as a residential community comprised of individuals who commute to the larger surrounding cities.

Driver of Crash Near Livermore Previously Arrested for DUI's

The driver involved in the fatal crash that killed a 16-year-old girl and critically injured a 26-year-old girl near Livermore on Wednesday night was previously arrested for driving intoxicated, according to Alameda County Court records. The driving records of 26-year-old Lauren Davis confirm she had been arrested twice before for driving under the influence and her most recent DUI was in May. According to records both DUI charges were reduced to reckless driving.

The Alameda County Coroner's Office on Monday identified a man who died in a fiery wrong-way freeway crash last month. Samuel Kim, 53, of Castro Valley, died after driving a black 2008 Mercedes-Benz ML350 into the center divide on Interstate 880 just north of the Auto Mall Parkway exit on Oct. 25.
