Downers Grove is located in northeastern Illinois, just 19 miles west of Chicago. The town is named in honor of founder Pierce Downer, who founded Downers Grove in 1832. During the Civil War over one hundred of the town's soldiers served in the Union Army. As there was a large abolitionist presence in the village, many of the older homes are thought to have been stops on the Underground Railroad.
