Dundalk is located in northern Maryland. The land that now makes up present-day Dundalk was originally inhabited by the Susquehanna Native American tribe. It was first explored by the famous John Smith in 1608 during an expedition in the Chesapeake Bay area. The city was named by an Irish immigrant, Henry McShane, in honor of his hometown Dundalk, Ireland. McShane is considered to be the founder of Dundalk, as he established the McShane Bell Foundry in 1856.
