Snowflakes have started to fall in the south and southwest metro, the first sign of a winter storm that will bring heavy snow to parts of the Twin Cities and a large portion of southern Minnesota later Monday morning and into the afternoon. Already, large school districts such as Burnsville, Prior Lake, Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan and South Washington County have called off classes Monday ahead of the storm that is expected to intensify throughout the day and bring rapidly deteriorating road conditions, as a few inches to more than a foot of snow will fall from the Twin Cities and points to the south, the National Weather Service said.

Cleanup continues on 21,000-gallon gasoline spill in Minn.; officials say major explosion avoided

EAGAN, Minn.-As crews continued to clean up the 21,000-gallon gasoline spill in Eagan on Tuesday, state and local officials said the air and water quality were safe for area residents. The number of workers at the scene of Monday's spill swelled to around 100 Tuesday and included officials from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, state Office of Pipeline Safety, and Magellan Midstream Partners, a Tulsa, Okla., company that owns and operates the busted pipeline.

A contractor struck a gasoline pipeline Monday afternoon in Eagan, spilling an estimated 21,000 gallons into the area and prompting the closure of several roads and businesses, including a Life Time Fitness. Eagan police and fire were called to the parking lot of Life Time Fitness at 565 Thomas Center Drive, east of Interstate 35E and north of Cliff Road, about 12:20 p.m. and discovered a significant gasoline leak, which was spilling onto nearby roads, said Eagan police officer Aaron Machtemes, the department spokesman.

2 drivers in crash are hit while standing outside vehicles along I-494, critically hurt

Two drivers standing near their damaged vehicles on a slick Twin Cities interstate shoulder were critically injured after another motorist lost control of his SUV, authorities said Sunday. The chain-reaction crash occurred shortly before 6 a.m. Saturday along Interstate 494 near the Pilot Knob Road exit on the Mendota Heights-Eagan border, the State Patrol reported.
