Man charged in fatal hit-run released from jail

The Middlesex County man involved in a fatal hit-and-run crash early Saturday in Kearny was released from custody during his first court appearance. The state did not file to detain 21-year-old Niraji Patel, of Edison, which would have kept him in custody for the duration of his prosecution.

Man killed by car hours after release from Hudson County jail

The body of Naphtali Dykes, 30, of East Orange was found "lying in a lifeless condition" in the middle of Routes 1 & 9 in Kearny around 2 a.m, according to Hudson County Prosecutor Ester Suarez. Police responding to the scene also found a driver who said he inadvertently hit Dykes, according to Suarez.

2 Byram men, Dover resident facing gun, drug-related charges

Two Byram men and a Dover man are facing multiple charges, some in the first-degree range, after authorities found multiple handguns, drugs and more than $14,000 in currency during a joint investigation into the illegal distribution of narcotics and firearms in Sussex and Morris counties. Naeem White, 20, who was residing in Byram but is originally from Wharton, is facing a total of 30 charges, including two counts of first-degree unlawful possession of a handgun, two counts of certain persons not to possess a weapon, and various other weapon- and drug-related charges.

Major Smith, 48, was indicted recently on insurance fraud, theft by deception, and and two counts of impersonation for accident-related disability claims he filed with his insurer between 2012 and 2015, the state's Insurance Fraud Prosecutor said.
