Originally inhabited by the Pocomtuc Native American tribe, the land that is now known as Enfield was settled in 1679 by settlers from Salem, Massachusetts. During the Great Awakening, Jonathan Edwards delivered his famous sermon, "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God," in Enfield.
