City considering further incentives for FedEx, Newgistics

In addition to millions in tax breaks, two companies planning to come to Greenwood could also get help with road projects to prepare the area for the traffic they are expected to bring. The city is considering spending $2 million on multiple road projects in an area east of Interstate 65 that is currently undeveloped, including adding stoplights, widening roads and adding turn lanes.

Head-on crash injures 7 people

Seven people were injured and at least one remains in the hospital in critical condition after police said a man left the scene of an accident, drove on the wrong side of the road, and then hit another vehicle head-on. Just before 3:30 p.m. Saturday, police were called to an accident on Stones Crossing Road, east of State Road 135, where multiple people were injured.

Nannie Catherine Brawner Peavler, 103, passed away peacefully at Greenwood Heath and Living Community on Monday afternoon, January 14, 2018. Nannie was born on February 9, 1914 to Robert Lee and Louisa Amanda Brawner in Bedford, KY, and was a graduate of Center Grove High School in 1933.

Greenwood approves TIF loan for road projects

Earlier this week, the Greenwood City Council approved giving the Greenwood Redevelopment Commission permission to borrow more than $5 million to help pay for road work. Projects include the construction of a quarter-mile connector road from Market Plaza to Surina Way, which would replace Machledt Drive that the city plans to remove and replace with a trail for pedestrians and bicyclists, a proposed roundabout at Smith Valley Road and Madison Avenue and a reconstruction and redesign of Emerson Avenue between Main Street and County Line Road.

New neighborhood, park proposed

A new park could be added to the southeast side of Greenwood, along with more than 150 townhouses as part of a recently proposed new development. If the property east of U.S. 31, between Stop 18 and Worthsville roads sounds familiar, that's because this is the second proposal for a new development there in the past six months.

Meeting set for traffic changes; project to construct a roundabout in busy intersection

The city of Greenwood is planning a meeting this week to discuss plans to build a roundabout and change the design of the area around Smith Valley Road, U.S. 31 and Madison Avenue. By the end of the summer, one of Greenwood's busiest intersections is set to be converted to a roundabout, and drivers will need to be ready to detour and re-learn how to navigate the area once work is complete.

Car hits home off U.S. 31

A home south of Greenwood was damaged Thursday morning after police said a vehicle traveling too fast around a curve slid off a wet road. Jacob Sims, 28, of Greenwood, told deputies that he was driving north on County Road 25W at about 8:55 a.m. Thursday when he lost control of his car as the road was curving into Pushville Road, just west of U.S. 31, a Johnson County Sheriff's Office report said.

Shoplifter flees, scares shoppers at 2nd store

A man fled police and store security after taking items from a Greenwood store, only to head directly to a neighboring store and rattle shoppers there during a scuffle, police said. Gayle G. Garling, 60, of Greenwood, was arrested on felony charges of resisting law enforcement and theft and misdemeanor charges of battery on police, resisting law enforcement and disorderly conduct.
