County Board To Hear Request For Rezoning

A Valley developer's delayed-then-revised plan to bring a sports complex to Rockingham County will face its final hurdle this week. The Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing Wednesday on Bill Neff's request to rezone a portion of his 32-acre property north of Harrisonburg.

Public Hearing On Shared-Use Path Tuesday

The 3-mile path would connect Bluestone Elementary, Harrisonburg High School, the Wyndham neighborhood and Hillandale Park, said Tom Hartman, Harrisonburg's assistant director of public works. The path would provide a safe walking route for students and community members to area schools, parks and neighborhoods, city staff said.

Housing Authority Proposes City Homebuying Program

On Tuesday, the authority will ask City Council to partner on a blight removal plan and a program in which city staff would help identify residents who may need help with a down payment or closing costs on a home, according to the PowerPoint HRHA will present Tuesday. It plans to gather $156,000 to help with home closing costs and deposits, according to the authority's proposal.

Men Accused Of Shooting Indicted

Omeldo Alberto Pena Pinedo, 25, is charged with two counts of armed robbery, malicious wounding, assault by mob and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Mercy House Receives Grant

On Friday, outgoing Gov. Terry McAuliffe announced $1.1 million in Homeless Reduction Grants, which included $100,000 for Mercy House, a nonprofit in Harrisonburg that helps homeless families save for and find affordable housing while offering them shelter. The grants were awarded through Virginia's Housing Trust Fund and will benefit 13 projects in the commonwealth, according to a press release from the governor's office.
