SAVANNAH The Armstrong State University/Georgia Southern University Consolidation Implementation Committee met last week and approved recommendations thave focused on tailoring academic degree programs for students, streamlining administrative processes to be more efficient, and defining the new admission requirements for the new Georgia Southern. A news release from the committee said the consolidation of Armstrong and Georgia Southern will ultimately increase access to public higher education, support student success, meet regional workforce development needs and prepare students to contribute to their fields of interest and to the region after graduation.

Blood drive at Hinesville City Hall Friday

The American Red Cross is urging blood donors to give in the final weeks of summer to help overcome a summer blood shortage. A blood drive will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday at Hinesville City Hall, 115 East M.L. King Drive.

Toddler drowns in Long Co.

A 19-month-old Long County child described as "an active country boy who enjoyed his hunting dogs, chickens, Mickey Mouse and anything outside," was found drowned in a family pool Sunday morning. The child, Robert Cole Deloach, was found in a pool at a residence on Winton Cowart Road around 10 a.m., according to Long County Sheriff's Detective Nicky Anderson.

Chamber names new information officer

A news release from the chamber said Schomburg will be responsible for maintaining the community website calendar, as well as writing press releases, taking photographs, and any other duties that pertain to public communication. NAACP, Liberty County Minority Chamber to hold peace initiative

The Liberty County NAACP and Liberty County Minority Chamber are holding what's being billed as a peace initiative, at 6 p.m. Tuesday on the Liberty County Courthouse steps in Hinesville. The initiative is in response to events that took place Sunday in Charlottesville, Va., where clashes between protestors and "white nationalist groups" attending a "Unite the Right" rally led to the death of one person and injured at least 19, according to national media.

Long County toddler drowns

Long County Sheriff's Detective Nicky Anderson said the boy was found submerged in the pool at a residence on Winton Coward Road around 10 a.m. Ludowici/Long County Volunteer and Rescue Fire Chief Chris Moss said firefighters arrived at the home within two minutes of receiving the call of a possible drowning. Moss said the parents and grandparents were performing CPR on the child.
