Elgin Police Chief Jeffrey Swoboda says the shooting happened when police tried to pull the woman over for a traffic stop about 12:35 a.m. Monday. Swoboda said officers negotiated with the woman for more than an hour to put the knife down.

Conant High School junior killed in Schaumburg crash

A 16-year-old Conant High School student was killed in a single-vehicle crash Sunday night in Schaumburg, police say. Graham W. Fath, of the 1400 block of Steward Street in an unincorporated area near Schaumburg, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash in the 1400 block of Wiley Road shortly before 9 p.m. Sunday, police said Monday.

Claire's Stores, the fashion accessories chain where legions of preteens got their ears pierced, is preparing to file for bankruptcy in the coming weeks, according to people with knowledge of the plans. The Hoffman Estates-based company is closing in on a deal in which control would pass from Apollo Global Management to lenders including Elliott Capital Management and Monarch Alternative Capital, according to the people, who asked not to be identified because the matter isn't public.

Hoffman Estates firefighters are investigating the cause of fire that caused an estimated $150,000 worth of damage to a single-family home on the 900 block of Rosedale Lane Thursday.
