Homestead is located in the southeastern tip of Florida, situated between the Biscayne National Park on the east and the Everglades National Park on the west. It is only 35 miles outside of Miami and 25 miles from Key Largo. The city's name was derived from a homesteading intended for the Florida East Coast Railway as it passed by the area on its way to Key West. Homestead is home to the Coral Castle, which was built by Edward Leedskalnin, a jilted lover. It is said that it took him over 28 years to finish the stone sculpture.
