Last conspirator sentenced in steroid ring

A Johnson City woman is the last of 22 defendants to be sentenced in connection with an East Tennessee anabolic steroid ring, according to a release from the Department of Justice Eastern District of Tennessee. Kari Carter, 27, of Johnson City, was sentenced to four months in prison, to be followed by three years of supervised probation.

USDA Grant To Boost Regional Farmers Markets

Farmers Markets in Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee just received a boost through a grant award of almost half a million dollars under the USDA's Farmers Market Promotion Program. The program coalition, headed by Appalachian Sustainable Development in Abingdon, Virginia, and the Appalachian RC&D Council in Johnson City, also includes Jonesborough Locally Grown, Unicoi Tennessee's Mountain Harvest Kitchen, the Appalachian Farmers Market Association, the Northeast Tennessee Tourism Association and the University of Tennessee Extension and Center for Profitable Agriculture.

Pregnant mother and man shot dead in triple homicide in Johnson City

According to WBIR 10News' sister station WCYB in Bristol, Va., the Washington County Sheriff's Office found 23-year-old Kyanna Howes Vaughn and 25-year-old Robert Aaron Vaughn dead from gunshot wounds around 7 p.m. Monday. Kyanna was six to seven months pregnant.

Enrollment is down significantly for Greene County schools and it could get worse over the next decade, according to information given to members of the Greene County Commission's Education Committee. WJHL reports that inmates in Washington County have faked heart attacks or other serious medical conditions and then left hospitals before doctors could see them. EMS Chief Dan Wheeley said each trip costs taxpayers about $600 if the person is uninsured and may also take an ambulance away from someone who actually needs it.
