Lakewood is located in central Colorado, just outside of Denver and is part of the Denver-Aurora-Broomfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city was built by Charles Welch and W. A. H. Loveland, who together constructed thirteen blocks in eastern Jefferson County in 1889. Loveland, who was once president of the Colorado Central Railroad, retired to his newly built community. Lakewood mother pleads not guilty to felony child abuse

The Lakewood woman arrested in October in connection with the alleged assault of her then 2-year-old daughter pleaded not guilty to all charges on Dec. 11. Melissa Mangeri, 28, will return to court for a motions hearing on Feb. 8. According to the arrest affidavit, Mangeri was present during one or more of the reported assaults on her daughter and failed to seek assistance. This placed the child "in a situation that posed a threat of injury or death," according to a press release from the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office.
