Lombard, "The Lilac Village, " is a suburb of Chicago. In 1927 the estate of Colonel William Plum, a local resident, was bequeathed to the village. The Plum property included his home, which became the village library, and a large garden containing 200 varieties of lilac bushes became a public park. Since 1930 Lombard has hosted an annual Lilac Festival and parade in May. "Lilac Time in Lombard, " is a 16-day festival ending in mid-May.

Ryan Dowd of the Hesed House in Aurora has conducted training that focuses on dealing with empathy issues such as sleeping patrons, body odor as well as the challenge of dealing with people who may be delusional.

In a move that could scuttle plans for a new Lombard library, a group of residents wants to put a question on the November ballot asking if a tax rate increase approved more than a year ago should be reduced. Voters supported the property tax increase in November 2016 after Helen M. Plum Memorial Library officials promised to tear down and replace their existing building at 110 W. Maple St. But the project has been stalled because the library hasn't been able to get permission from the park district to build more than one story on land that used to be part of Lilacia Park.
