About: manteca, california

Manteca is located in central California in San Joaquin County. The city was founded by Joshua Cowell in 1861. He had laid claim to over 1,000 acres and built houses on what is now known as downtown Manteca. When it came time for residents to choose a name for their new town, they chose "Cowell Station." Unfortunately, the name "Cowell Station" had already been taken by a nearby town and the residents were forced to choose a new name. They decided on "Monteca," but the railroad misprinted it as "Manteca," which is Spanish for lard.

Staying true to the priorities it set for itself recently, the Stockton City Council unanimously approved several initiatives that focus on homelessness and lack of affordable housing in the city. The council's action during a special meeting Tuesday included the extension of a fee exception to spark construction in downtown, affordable housing loan allocations for several projects and a discussion about the terms of the county's proposed homeless czar position, who will be responsible for coordinating homeless services throughout the county and will work with the cities and service providers.

Police are searching for a woman who, on multiple occasions during the past two weeks, defrauded a liquor store using a prepaid money card with no funds on the card. Each time she used the money card, the credit card reader would not complete the transaction so the woman would give the clerk at Miner Mart, 1046 W. California's homeless increase 'significant'

STOCKTON - Officials estimate there are more than 1,500 homeless men, women and children living in San Joaquin County, a number compiled almost a year ago that admittedly is an undercount due to the fact it is gathered within a single week and limited to the county's four largest cities.
