Baker defends T's contractor despite theft arrests

Gov. Charlie Baker yesterday defended the MBTA's decision to hire a private contractor to run its warehouse system, saying the arrest of two workers on charges of stealing from the T is a "blemish" on an otherwise successful contract. Baker gave no indication that the Friday arrests of George Halley, 32, and Michael Frisoli, 31 - two subcontractors for Mancon Inc. - would jeopardize the Virginia company's five-year, $28 million deal with the T. "The performance of the contractor to date has far exceeded the performance of the warehouse when it was run by the T," Baker told the Herald, saying that Mancon will for the first time give the T a "real reconciliation" of the parts and supplies it's ordering and using through its warehouse.

Pair arrested at the Fellsway garage

A pair of workers hired by the MBTA's warehouse contractor were arrested and hauled away from a T garage yesterday after authorities say they were plundering copper wire, cables and other materials from the agency. George Halley, 32, of Somerville and Michael Frisoli, 31, of Cambridge were arrested at the MBTA's Fellsway garage in Medford and are both facing a charge of larceny over $250, transit police said.

Bidding on Green Line extension due Thursday

The Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority will soon learn if its strategy for containing the ballooning costs of the Green Line extension is working when it receives bids from three companies for the multibillion dollar project's largest contract. And in an unusual twist, the agency is asking the bidders to revive parts of the project that were unceremoniously dumped in 2016 in the face of a billion-dollar overrun, such as canopies over train stops, and the final 3,000-foot stretch of a bike and walking path to be built alongside the rails.

Report highlights commuter frustration

In a series of round tables, Massachusetts residents told state senators they want better transportation options and have a willingness to pay for them. Frustrated by the condition of public transportation infrastructure around the state, residents from Boston to the Berkshires who were engaged by state senators expressed interest in expanded rail and bus service and a willingness to pay for it, according to a new report.
