Kitten rescued from cat-napper

The 2-month-old tortoiseshell-tabby cat - with both patches and stripes - was returned to the MSPCA at Nevins Farm in Methuen yesterday after police were able to track down the culprit in Malden. Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Director of Adoption Centers and Programs Mike Keiley said social media posts helped identify the woman wanted for the cat caper.

Gov. planning 'bit more' for opioid education

Gov. Charlie Baker, appearing before a legislative committee on Tuesday to pitch his newest opioid abuse treatment and prevention bill, told lawmakers the budget he intends to file next week will go beyond his initial $2 million pitch to help schools screen students for signs of addiction and educate them on the dangers of opioids. "It will be a little bit more," Baker told Rep. Diana DiZoglio of Methuen, who also raised questions about how that money would be distributed.

Man sought by authorities for 16 years captured

A man who's been wanted by New Hampshire authorities for 16 years has been captured just across the border in Massachusetts. Police investigating reports of possible drug activity at a Methuen home earlier this month arrested 39-year-old Eric Rivera-Velez.

Eric Rivera-Velez, 39, who was also on a New Hampshire "most wanted" list, evaded authorities for 16 years before he was tracked down through an anonymous tip, police said in a Facebook post Sunday. Rivera-Velez had multiple active warrants for cocaine trafficking in both states.

Pedestrian struck, injured in Pelham

A Methuen woman suffered non-life threatening injuries after she was struck by a car while crossing the street in the area of 89 Nashua Road shortly after 6 p.m. Wednesday. Nina Perednia, 53, who had just been involved in a minor motor vehicle accident on Nashua Road, was struck by a 2007 Honda Accord after she exited her damaged vehicle, according to Pelham police officers.
