Second suspect in Calhoun murder charged

A second suspect in the murder of Frances Ham was booked at the parish prison on suspicion of second-degree murder last week. Amanda Franklin, 20, of Calhoun, was booked at Ouachita Correctional Center on the murder charge Feb. 16. Bail was set at $1 million.

Attorney wants confession in Colts player's death thrown out

A judge is being asked to throw out a confession from a Guatemalan man living illegally in the U.S. who's charged in a drunken-driving crash that killed Indianapolis Colts linebacker Edwin Jackson and his Uber driver. The attorney for 37-year-old Manuel Orrego-Savala filed a motion Tuesday in Marion County court, arguing that Orrego-Savala's statements to a state trooper after the Feb. 4 crash shouldn't be allowed because he wasn't first read his rights.

Monroe police arrested two suspects on suspicion of felony theft and criminal conspiracy last week stemming from an investigation of signs being sold online. The felony theft investigation at the Real Smoker's Paradise on DeSiard Street in Monroe revealed that the store owner, Marcllus R. Elahi, 39, of 2706 Magellan Drive, Monroe, opened an account through Marsala Beverage and received several neon signs for advertisement purposes only, according to the Feb. 16 arrest report.
