Naugatuck is a consolidated borough and town located in western Connecticut. Just south of the town of Waterbury, Naugatuck straddles the Naugatuck River, which it was named for. The area was settled in 1701 and quickly grew into a farming community. During the Industrial Revolution the town transformed into a "mill town," much like many other towns found in the Naugatuck Valley. The town mostly manufactured rubber and in 1892 nine rubber manufacturing companies combined to become the United States Rubber Company. The company was headquartered in Naugatuck until the 1980s.

Cops: Man claims he was 'possessed,' forced to steal

A Bronx, N.Y., man, charged with stealing the cremated remains of 18 people from a cemetery here, now claims he was "possessed" by a Santeria priestess and forced to take the remains for her. Police said partially based on the new claims of Aneudy Davila on Tuesday they arrested priestess, 40-year-old Janette Mateo at her Milford home.

DEEP determines sewage spill killed fish

Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection spokesman Dennis Schain said the treatment plant experienced an electrical malfunction the night of Oct. 9 that caused it to dump partially-treated and untreated sewage into the Naugatuck River. About 5 million gallons flowed into the river.
