Naugatuck is a consolidated borough and town located in western Connecticut. Just south of the town of Waterbury, Naugatuck straddles the Naugatuck River, which it was named for. The area was settled in 1701 and quickly grew into a farming community. During the Industrial Revolution the town transformed into a "mill town," much like many other towns found in the Naugatuck Valley. The town mostly manufactured rubber and in 1892 nine rubber manufacturing companies combined to become the United States Rubber Company. The company was headquartered in Naugatuck until the 1980s.

Longtime borough educators to retire

When the school year ends, Naugatuck Public Schools will lose a combined 77 years of education experience due to the retirement of two administrators. Naugatuck High School Principal Jan Saam and Salem Elementary School Principal Jennifer Kruge both plan to retire this year, the Board of Education announced last week.

The Board of Education is letting the Columbus Day holiday set sail in favor of giving students a different day off. The board last week voted 7 to 1 to approve a 2018-19 school calendar that gives students the day before Thanksgiving off and makes Columbus Day a school day.

Samantha Bombardier, 24, of Hard Street, Naugatuck, was charged Jan. 9 with third-degree burglary, second-degree criminal mischief, fourth-degree larceny and second-degree failure to appear. Police reported on Jan. 9 Bombardier was arrested on active arrest warrants.

Two arrested in illegal towing case

Two people from Steve's Auto Sales at 219 Naugatuck Avenue have been arrested in connection with the illegal towing of vehicles in October. An investigation showed that on Oct. 1, 2 and 3, motor vehicles were towed by Steve's Auto Sales without anyone asking for the vehicles to be towed.

Police say in October 2017, they received several complaints about possible illegal towing of vehicles. An investigation revealed that the on October 1st, 2nd and 3rd, motor vehicles were towed by Steve's Auto, of 219 Naugatuck Avenue.

Borough extends golf pro's contract
