Developer Phil Tagami testifies in Oakland coal ban trial

The question over whether Oakland had enough evidence to ban the handling and shipment of coal within city limits was put under a microscope Tuesday, at the start of a federal trial brought on by a prominent developer's lawsuit. The 2016 ordinance unanimously approved by the Oakland City Council directly put a stop to developer Phil Tagami's plan to import trainloads of coal from Utah to be stored in Oakland and then loaded on ships bound for Asia.

Lawyers: 4 sue city, UC Berkeley over injuries at riot

Four San Francisco Bay Area residents who say they were injured by protesters during a riot ahead of a speech by a right-wing provocateur at the University of California, Berkeley filed a lawsuit against the university and the city, their attorneys said Tuesday. The plaintiffs say in the suit filed Thursday in federal court in Oakland that officials failed to protect them from being pepper-sprayed and beaten when they were trying to attend a Feb. 1 speech by Milo Yiannopoulos, a conservative commentator.

A fire Tuesday afternoon apparently started by a marijuana grow operation badly damaged a detached garage at an East Oakland residence, authorities said. The fire was reported at 1:28 p.m. in the garage in the 7800 block of Plymouth Street.
