Colonel Jonathan Stevenson bought the Rancho Los Medanos land grant to construct a town which he named New York Landing. When coal was discovered nearby, the town changed its name to Black Diamond, after a mining firm. In 1911 citizens of the town voted to change the name to Pittsburg in honor of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The name was selected because of the relationship that the city had with the steel building industry.

Court decides whether Pittsburg man accused of killing teen girl is mentally fit for trial

A man accused of killing his 17-year-old girlfriend when he was 21 was not found competent to stand trial Wednesday. Alameda County Superior Court Judge James Cramer found Darion Brown, 23, of Pittsburg, incompetent to stand trial during a mental health hearing Wednesday morning.

Concord City Council to Discuss Possible Move to District Elections

The Concord City Council tonight will discuss changing the city's elections to a district-based system rather than the current at-large setup. The proposed change is in response to two letters, one from a Walnut Creek-based attorney and another from the Malibu-based law firm Shenkman & Hughes, which has sent similar letters to other jurisdictions around the state, including recently in Santa Rosa and San Rafael.

Alleged East Contra Costa gang members ordered to stand trial following FBI raids

A Contra Costa judge ordered seven alleged members of an East Contra Costa street gang known as "Broad Day" to stand trial felony charges that include conspiracy to commit murder. The defendants, Darnell "Nelly" Lash, 24; Ezell Jenkins, 29; Dasheid Lash, 21; D'Vance Sumblin, 20; Lester Curry, 20; Larry "Big L" Goines Jr., 32; and Javell Cooksey, 19, were among eight arrested by federal and state authorities in a countywide gang bust that was announced last week .
