Colonel Jonathan Stevenson bought the Rancho Los Medanos land grant to construct a town which he named New York Landing. When coal was discovered nearby, the town changed its name to Black Diamond, after a mining firm. In 1911 citizens of the town voted to change the name to Pittsburg in honor of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The name was selected because of the relationship that the city had with the steel building industry.

2-Year-Old Girl Declared Brain Dead After Crash in Antioch

Murder charges were filed Friday in Contra Costa County Superior Court against a Pittsburg man who allegedly stole a truck that was involved in a collision that killed a 4-year-old girl, according to sheriff's officials. A 2-year-old girl who was seriously injured in a crash that killed her 4-year-old sister in Antioch on Wednesday has been declared brain dead, her family announced Sunday.

VIDEO: 4-year-old girl killed in stolen truck crash identified

Lenexy died Wednesday after a stolen truck crashed into the vehicle she was riding in just before 1 p.m. on Somersville Road at Highway 4. Lenexy's 2-year-old sister, Camila, is on life support at Children's Hospital in Oakland, according to her father, Jesus Cardoza. Jesus says Camila shows no sign of life and doctors are doing all that they can.

Man Fatally Shot By Police In Restaurant Parking Lot Identified

An Antioch man fatally shot by police last Friday night outside of a restaurant in Pittsburg has been identified by the Contra Costa County coroner's office as 43-year-old Terry Amons. Amons was allegedly reaching for a gun when police opened fire outside the Nation's Giant Hamburgers at 3789 Railroad Ave., in a case that started around 10:45 p.m. Officers were responding to a report of a drug deal occurring in the parking lot.
