SMART seeks $148,000 from FEMA for storm damage

The Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit agency is seeking federal emergency money after last winter's storms caused damage to the system, including a slide near the Puerto Suello Hill Tunnel in San Rafael. The SMART Board of Directors approved a request this week to seek $148,000 in Federal Emergency Management Agency funds for flood damage that destroyed electrical equipment, caused track problems and slides along the rail route.

Dixie school board considers parcel tax option

Officials of the Dixie Elementary School District in north San Rafael this week reviewed a draft of a parcel tax measure they are thinking of placing on a May 8, 2018 all-mail ballot. If approved by voters, the measure, discussed at Tuesday's board of trustees meeting, would raise the current annual $352 per parcel tax by $118, to a total annual tax of $470, effective July 1, 2018.

Lawmakers say California's proposed marijuana rules will hurt small family farms

Two legislators called Tuesday for changes to regulations for growing marijuana in California to better protect small family farmers from being driven out of business by big corporate cultivators. Initial proposals to cap licensed marijuana farms at one to four acres were discarded by the state Department of Food and Agriculture, which has since proposed new rules without any cap, according to a letter of complaint to the agency by State Sen. Mike McGuire and Assemblyman Jim Wood .

Appeal rejected in Novato gang-linked murder attempt

A state appeals court has upheld the life sentences for two men convicted of a gang-related murder attempt in the Hamilton neighborhood. The crime occurred on Jan. 3, 2011, at the Hamilton Marketplace shopping center, where two men were shot while sitting in a car.
