Situated on the Gulf Coast of Florida, just south of the Tampa-St. Petersburg area and north of Fort Myers, Sarasota became a city in 1913. The Ringling family chose to make Sarasota the winter home of their Ringling Brothers Circus, back in 1919. Charles Ringling developed or invested in much of the property in the area, and now, Ringling Boulevard is a main thoroughfare named after him.
