A suburb of Charleston, Summerville was settled after the Revolutionary War and was named Pineland Village in 1785. Summerville became a town in 1847 and was named a top spot for the recovery of lung and throat disorders in 1899 by the Congress of Physicians, due in part to the presence of so many trees that released turpentine derivatives into that area. The area today plays host to the Flowertown Festival. Held each spring it is the largest arts and crafts festival in South Carolina.

Developer to fix up Dorchester Village

A developer is looking to fix up the old Bi-Lo shopping center at the corner of Old Trolley and Dorchester roads. Project officials met with Summerville's Commercial Design and Review Board Jan. 18 to get conceptual review on the plans, which calls for redeveloping the existing 60,483-square-foot building that houses the vacant Bi-Lo, as well as touching up the pothole-ridden parking lot.

MUSC to open facility at Citadel Mall

To meet the needs of the growing Charleston region, the Medical University of South Carolina is trying something nontraditional: a medical center in a shopping mall. Dr. Patrick Cawley, CEO of MUSC Health , said the hospital had been looking at building a facility in West Ashley for several years.
