Toledo firm buys 2 buildings near Southwyck mall site

A Toledo company has purchased two buildings near the former Southwyck Shopping Center from the city of Toledo and will redevelop the property to expand its business operations. The city finalized the sale Friday for the property at 5355 and 5405 Southwyck Blvd. to Olympic Real Estate Group LLC. Owner Paul Rahe said he plans to redevelop the 20,000-square-foot building at 5355 Southwyck into commercial office space for Olympic's sister company, Rahe & Co.

Man robbed, shot in leg in East Toledo

An East Toledo man was shot in the leg during what police described as a robbery outside his apartment Monday evening. The man, who was not immediately identified but believed to be in his mid-30s, was taken to Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center for treatment of a wound not considered life-threatening, officers at the scene said.

A former paraprofessional for Toledo Public Schools was placed on community control for two years rather than sent to prison Monday for breaking a student's wrist after forcing him onto a school bus last year. Lucas County Common Pleas Judge Stacy Cook also ordered that Anthony Miller, 46, of the 2900 block of South Byrne Road complete an anger management course and perform 100 hours of community service.

South Toledo man gets 10 years after arrest with 13 pounds of fentanyl

Ricardo Rivera, 41, of the 1400 block of Western Avenue was arrested after federal agents seized some six kilograms - approximately 13 pounds - of fentanyl that Rivera had placed in a car that was followed and stopped just south of Bowling Green last May. Rivera said he was "sending the drugs back for heroin" when the driver, Andres Mendez, was stopped heading south on I-75 by federal agents who called the seizure one of the largest ever in northwest Ohio. Michael Freeman, an assistant U.S. Attorney, told Judge Jack Zouhary that Rivera was not returning the fentanyl to its original source but to a drug distributor in Dayton who was going to exchange it for heroin.

Money generated by filing fees in domestic relations court and marriage license fees continue to help fund two Toledo domestic violence shelters. Both Bethany House and YWCA Domestic Violence Shelter for 2017 received about $48,800 from such fees, which counties collect and then distribute to shelters, as required by state law.

Collection agency to add 500 jobs to area

The third floor of ProMedica's Ebeid Institute on Madison Avenue will house a call center for Credit Adjustments Inc., slated to bring 500 jobs to the area. A Defiance-based debt-collection company will open a Toledo call center Monday with 17 employees and plans to add 500 more local jobs over the next three years, the company announced.
